About IBFI

The International Bike Fitting Institute is a global organization setting standards and offering training and certifications for bike fit professionals. IBFI offers four certification levels. Here’s how you can interpret them when looking for an IBFI fitter near you.

Level 1 (IBFI Accredited Technician)

The IBFI Level 1 certification covers basic biomechanics and posture analysis as well as the primary components of the bicycle. At this level, a bike fitter should be able to adjust your cleats, saddle, and handlebars within an ideal range. They will also be able to consult on bike sizing to achieve your optimal measurements.

Level 2 (IBFI Certified Bike Fitter)

Level 2 expands on the basic training by covering more advanced assessment techniques and more specialized disciplines within cycling, such as TT/triathlon or track cycling. If you’re concerned with aerodynamics or compete in a specific cycling discipline, you may want to consider a Level 2+ fitter.

Level 2 fitters also receive additional training in gender-specific fit issues.

Level 3 (IBFI Advanced Bike Fitter)

At Level 3, IBFI fitters are trained injury management and advanced tools and techniques like motion capture systems and saddle pressure mapping. If you have persistent injuries, very specific biomechanical needs, or you want to take full advantage of modern bike fit technology, a Level 3+ bike fitter might be best for you.

Level 4 (IBFI Master Bike Fitter)

Level 4 is the highest level certification from IBFI. These fitters get the deepest training on advanced tools like 2D and 3D motion capture and the use of wind tunnels for aerodynamic testing. They are qualified to advise on the broadest range of bike fit issues, including para-cycling and para-triathlon.
